Comments from One of the Creators

I did the zine bit once. I and my partners in crime did two issues of "Heart of Glory", a Klingon-based zine. I fronted all the actual production costs, and my art director swallowed the cost of supplies. Eventually, this got to be too cumbersome, even with Bill Hupe doing the actual publishing. I lost $400 putting two issues together, including courtesy issues and whatnot. Had I not already been bogged down considerably by HoG's short run, I might have sent Randy Landers a hard copy of "Yesterday's Heroes" and its sequels. I don't know if "Alliance" meets Orion's criteria, but "Yesterday's..." could have been adjusted slightly. Still, by the time I called it quits with HoG, I was just getting started on ASC. (Some of you may remember the aborted "Beyond the Barrier" from before my days as J.) When I saw the response I got as a result of posting YH, formatting errors and all, I realized that I wasn't spending a dime for any of this. It was a by-product of two e-mail accounts with news access that I already paid for. And I didn't have to pay for what I was getting in return. The zine experience, though, has had its benefits. Should aI decide to take the plunge again, I can always run it past Randy to see if he wants to publish it. And had I not done HoG, I would not have met the author of the Kearsarge Chronicles, and the Alliance stories might have lost some very valuable input. As for pword vs. eword, I think eword, for the most part, is still another variant on pword. A lot of stories I print out because I don't want to sit and strain my eyes. Eword, with all of its possibilities, will simply carve its own little niche. As long as they can make paper, they'll print books. [1]
