Reactions and Reviews

This story would have been perfect as a Gen story, illustrating quite beautifully the friendship between Kirk and Spock. The touch of their minds during the ceremony of Brother Pledging was quite lovely, as was Spock's quiet declaration earlier that "I have found no one more worthy." I had real problem when the story introduced a sexual element. First, I was unclear as to what did happen on the planet when Kirk and Spock fought, even wondering if there were a rape involved. And Spock's love was transmitted so quickly that I almost missed it. Spock's later verbal declaration of his feelings was too subservient for my taste, too. I found it hard to believe that Kirk would allow him to speak like that. However, there are some very lovely touches in this story that made it quite memorable. The paragraph where Kirk is musing that he was dangerous to both McCoy and Spock was so well-written. And the concept of a chess game that had been played before being re-played during an emotional conversation was a real stroke of genius. And McCoy sounded so much like himself when he says "Course I am. Now, what's all this nonsense about?" A nice job of writing, but I still think it would have made a better 'friendship' story by cutting out the last third. [1]
