Guilds as a term and concept that see distinctive uses in several fandoms:
- As a significant feature in the Discworld novels, the term has been picked up for fandom organizaton. In our world and Discworld a guild is a community of people who share the same profession (i.e. Guild of Thieves, Guild of Bakers, Guild of Engravers). In Discworld fandom the term guild is often used as a way to organize or describe aspects of the fandom and community while referencing the books.
- In video game fandoms, particularly multiplayer games, Guilds are group of fans that organize to play together, often to fight as a team or meet in-game objectives that are impossible to do alone.
- Neopets also has guilds, which are more like social clubs.
Discworld Examples
- The disc(w)or(l)d discord server labels some channels on the server using the Guild style. For example the pet channel is called “guild-of-pets”.
- The Guild of Fans and Disciples is a discworld fan club [1].
