Greg is one of the main characters in the Over the Garden Wall miniseries, voiced by Collin Dean. He is a young boy of indeterminant age and has an older half brother Wirt who he is lost in the unknown with. He spends the majority of the show with his brother, though he appears less concerned with returning home and more concerned with finding a good name for his frog.

Greg is shown to have caused inciting incident for the brother's adventure into the Unknown by taking Wirt's mix tape for Sara and giving it to her friends who then put it in Sara's pocket, sparking Wirt's panic to retrieve the mix tape which leads to the brothers following Sara to the grave yard and eventually going over the wall.

Greg is an incredibly cheerful character and rarely seems affected negatively by the events of the show, this is often carried over into his fan depictions. The notable exception to this is after Greg makes an unspecified wish to the Queen of the Clouds that ends with him walking off into the woods with The Beast. Initially, Greg is undaunted, and shows of his cleverness and imaginativeness when the Beast gives him impossible tasks.

The Beast has Greg do several impossible tasks, and at last leaves the boy in the snow trying to lower the sun into a teacup. Up to this point Greg has remained undaunted however being in the cold is clearly wearing on him and he is beginning to look sick. When we next see Greg he is surrounded by edelwood and admits to stealing the rock he has been caring around. He seems very tired and very weak.

Throughout the show Greg carries a rock, which he holds up when he says rock facts, which seem to be things he has made up. He also carries around a frog, which has a name subject to change as Greg searches for a suitable name. Notable names include Kitty, Wirt, and George Washington however the frog's name is eventually settled on being Jason Funderberker after Wirt's romantic rival.

Fandom

  • Greg is a very common character in fan works, though he is less popular than Wirt.
  • Greg rarely appears in fanworks without Wirt, this could be due to the fact they are together for the majority of the show.
  • Greg is very rarely shipped with other characters within fanworks.
  • A large portion of Greg's appearance in fandom is related to him being consumed by an edelwood. In many fanworks Greg is fully turned into an edelwood, this is most common in Beast!Wirt fics.
  • Beast!Greg is a rarer occurrence than Beast!Wirt, in which it is Greg who takes up the role of the Beast. This version of Greg is usually depicted as eternally a child and typically maintains his naiveté and innocence. Wirt is occasionally the lantern bearer for his brother, whether he ages or not depends on the depiction. Sometimes Greg and Wirt become the Beast versions of themselves together.
  • Greg sometimes returns to the real world without his brother, most of these works are focused on Wirt remaining in the unknown than Greg without his brother back at home.
  • Greg is very young in the show and is sometimes depicted as having forgotten the Unknown or his ideas of it become more hazy while Wirt remembers.
  • Greg is a heavily quoted character from the show with some of his lines such as "You have beautiful eyes" and "That's a rock fact!" Being very famous in fandom, often showing up as nods to the original line in fanworks.

Trivia

  • Prior to the episode Babes in the Wood Greg is shown multiple times talking about wishes. He asks for Jason Funderberker (Frog) to have fingernails to better play the guitar and repeatedly wishes for a magic tiger, however when offered a wish by the Queen of the Clouds he does not wish for any of these things. Though the exact wish is unknown, it can be assumed that it had to do with freeing Wirt from the clutches of the Beast, this is occasionally discussed in fandom.
  • Some of Greg's early designs included him wearing other things on his head, such as a pot and a mushroom. This is occasionally depicted in fanart though it rarely occurs in fanfic.
