Reactions and Reviews

Avon and Blake go undercover to meet a possible contact. What they don't initially realise is that Orac didn't tell them the significance of the outfits they were wearing. Avon finds that he has to pose as Blake's 'companion', a role that inevitably requires him to sleep with Blake eventually. Although the story has a couple of trivial flaws, overall it is highly enjoyable. I got a lot of fun out of watching Avon forced to pretend to be a brainless piece of fluff! [1]

And the story is, as well. Fluffy social comedy about Avon and Blake visiting a planet where Avon must behave as Blake's toy-boy (called 'Gorgeous' for his looks). Much lovingly-described Avon-in-beautiful-clothes--and lovingly-described Avon-sulking. A relatively gentle story, in which both characters come across as very likeable.[2]

ok - cards on the table. fake relationship is one of my faaaaaavourite tropes of all time (maybe you guessed from what i said about halil). and this one also has avon having to pretend to be blake's brainless sex slave companion - and he is very cross (i love making the cross/awkward ones suffer through terrible tropes) and has to wear a negligee (after saying "Not in a million years" but blake looks at him very seriously and he does it for the Cause) and feeds blake broccoli vol-au-vents (because blake hates broccoli. petty revenge - i like it) and also uses his computer skills for the plot! anyway, so this one is totally ridiculous and over-the-top and silly, and blake says that avon is beautiful about fifty times (and so does everyone else. to the extent that avon is known, in this fic, as 'Gorgeous' i.e. that is his fake slave name), and for some reason they have to literally have sex in front of the guys who they are trying to recruit to the cause because that's the kind of planet this is... and yes, i'm sure it's terrible or whatever (though the dialogue is good) but i liked this fic a lot. i wish i could say i'm ashamed, but i'm really not.[3]

Somewhat of a guilty pleasure - but it is, definitely a pleasure. Avon has to pretend to be Blake's over-coiffed and brainless 'companion' as part of some rebellion business. The fun of the 'fake relationship' trope is often how much they don't want to do it - and Avon really really doesn't want to wear a negligee or feed Blake pastries. But he does use his cover to hack into computers and is generally clever and excellent. And they fall for each other - which is the actual point of the 'fake relationship' trope. Essentially, 'Gorgeous' is a great (and very amusing) example of one of the most popular plot mcguffins in B/A.[4]
