Golden Age is a term that comes from Greek mythology and is often used to describe a period of peace, prosperity, and harmony. By now, the term is frequently used in popular culture too.
The Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction documents science fiction fans as early as 1948 using the term "golden age" to describe a past time when the best sf was written. It also references a 1938 prediction of a golden age to start soon.[1]
Examples of Usage in Popular Culture and Fandom
- The Golden Age of Comic Books in the United States is often defined as 1938-1956. 1938 marked the first appearance of Superman.
- The period 1938-1946 is often described as the Golden Age of Science Fiction in the United States.
- The Golden Age of Hollywood took place approximately between 1927 to 1969. 1927 marked the advent of sound film.
- According to the Pulp Magazines Project, American Pulp Fiction enjoyed it's Golden Age in the years from 1896 - 1946.
