Ghost King AU is a common AU found in Danny Phantom and its associated crossover fandoms, especially DC x DP. A Ghost King AU sees a character, almost always Danny Fenton, acting as the Ghost King and ruler of the Ghost Zone. The trope is incredibly popular; as of September 2024, the AO3 canonical for the concept has over 2,000 works.
Canon
Pariah Dark is the Ghost King in canon. In season two, Vlad awakens him from his eternal slumber and Pariah Dark proves himself to be a tyrant. Together with the efforts of other ghosts, Danny successfully defeats him and returns the Ghost King to his eternal sleep.
Common Trope Characteristics
The Ghost King is almost always decided via trial by combat in these AUs, Danny takes Pariah Dark's position by virtue of being the main person responsible for his defeat. Many fanworks involve Danny initially refusing his role as the Ghost King. Other fanworks may include a coronation event where Danny formally becomes Ghost King. The Fright Knight is often an ally to the Ghost King and thus becomes Danny's ally.
