Reactions and Reviews

1991

This was short yet so complete.

Really good at illustrating some of Kirk and Spock's strongest personality traits: Kirk's insatiable desire to be free at any cost; while Spock would've waited for Sarek or been resigned to his fate. He could ignore his physical enslavement (as much as possible) because his mind was free. And the fact that, whether he believed it was logical or not, Spock would do whatever he could to help Kirk. 1999

Someone — Shelley? Someone said last issue Karla was known for her short stories. No wonder! She says so much in so few pages.

Like this otherworld scenario where both Kirk and Spock are prisoners of slavers. Kirk exhibits his usual charm and a fierce determination to be free. Spock is resigned to his fate. Until that fate makes them friends, and their friendship makes them more.

So well told you’d have fallen in love with Kirk if you’d never heard of him before. And Spock’s feelings for him are legend. Like his thoughts while confined to the punishment box, “he thought of Jim. He lived on remembered smiles, recalled touches. ...his mind repeated their conversations...”. Sorta like I do when I’m away from K/S. [2]

2009

Vulcan prisoner Spock was resigned to his fate, but the shining and relentless Jim Kirk made him hope again despite his will. Kelly excels at captivating, very short stories that pack a powerful punch and this is one of my favorites. [3]
