Fred/Wesley is the pairing of Winifred Burkle and Wesley Wyndam-Price in Angel the Series.
Canon
Fred and Wesley worked together at Angel Investigations, and later at Wolfram & Hart. Soon after they begin a romantic relationship, Fred is exposed to the essence of an ancient demon. The parasitic presence slowly kills Fred, turning her into a shell for the demon Illyria. Fred dies in Wesley's arms.
In the finale of Angel, Wesley is mortally wounded, and Illyria offers to lie to him. She manifests as Fred, and comforts Wesley as he dies in her arms.
Fandom
Fred and Wesley were been paired in fanfiction before their canonical relationship began. Many works focused on this pair getting together. Some fans dislike this pairing, as they prefer the canonical Fred/Gunn pairing or the non-canonical Wesley/Gunn pairing. Still other fans were partial to the poly pairing of Fred/Gunn/Wes.
The death of Fred, and introduction of Illyria was not a barrier to determined Fred/Wesley shippers. There were a small number of fics where Fred was saved from Illyria's presence. Fresliria, the pairing of Fred/Wes/Illyria also appeared. In many of these works Illyria was able to share her consciousness with Fred. Most works pairing Fred/Wes following the introduction of Illyria were dark and focused on grief, and fix-its with happy endings were rare.
The appearance of both actors as love interests in Joss Whedon's 2012 film 'Much Ado About Nothing' led to renewed interest in this pairing. Many Fresley fans were happy to see these two have a happy ending, and the film led to a small number of crossover works.
