Recs and Reviews
I had to ask on MA and LJ for the title/author of the story, because it's not on the MA archive. In fact, it's on a page of Destina's website for "chaff" -- WIPs and stories she's not totally happy with, which explains why I couldn't find it (Oh, the hours of research! *g*).Rereading the story, there are a few POV problems and odd phrasing, but overall the good far outweighs any stylistic issues. Simply put, the story is "front page" stuff and doesn't deserve relegation to the also-ran page in this reccer's opinion. Hey, I'll take Destina's backpage stories to most author's top stories any day of the week, and twice on Fridays :-)
Besides the wonderful twists, which I've hopefully not ruined simply by virtue of recommending the story, I can hear Qui-Gon's voice absolutely - the baritone of the movie character just leaps off the page. Obi-Wan's world view is a bit different from TPM Obi, and especially AotC Obi, but Destina sells it nonetheless. And did I mention the sex is very hot? Silly me for not doing so sooner.[1]
This is my final rec of the month, a lovely poignant story in which Obi-Wan must face his inner demons in order to pass his trials. Destina is an awesome writer who couldn’t write a bad anything if she tried.Excerpt:
It was near dawn when Obi-Wan rose stiffly, stretching tight muscles. So many things were clear to him, things his mind had surrounded with walls and excuses before. He had done something a Jedi should never do. No wonder the Council had cast him out so he could be made to see.
With the realizations came understanding, acceptance of his imperfections. He would never be the perfect Jedi. He would not even be the best of their Order, but he would learn to become what he had hoped so long ago - a man who followed the Light, who was one with the Force and who served its will without anger. So many facets of his future had become clear to him...the threads were tied together, though he hadn't known how closely they were related. He loved Qui-Gon; he always had. As his teacher, and as much, much more. He had been foolish not to say so long before.[2]
