I almost passed up this story because of its subject - golf. I'm glad I didn't -- I would have missed a terrific and very funny story. That I enjoyed it so much is a supreme tribute to the authors' ability to overcome the resistance of a reader whose disinterest in golf is extreme even compared to her lack of interest in sports in general... The story is great fun -- an admiral makes a golf date for Kirk, Spock and McCoy as the only way to get through a federation senator (and golf addict) who holds the purse strings for an important project. The trouble is, they have to learn to play. Spock memorizes the rules of the game, the technique, and the protocol of golf etiquette and instructs his two friends. The "lessons" are hilarious, and the authors' effortless command of golf made the humor even more effective. I know nothing about the game, but the authors presented it in such exquisite detail that I could not fail to be impressed. Spock's "pretend you have a hard-on" teaching technique had me practically rolling on the floor. And the denouement, in which the Enterprise officers' teamwork and Spock's encyclopedic knowledge win the day, is truly delightful. Everyone is wonderfully in character. And as if all this weren't enough, an established (and very sexy) K/S relationship is deftly woven into the story. The little "golfing" dingbats between sections were a nice touch. [1]
What a delightful, refreshing story! I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who finds golf a sport of extreme awkwardness. The characterizations were so-o-o perfect in this. It was so easy to imagine Kirk's and McCoy's struggles and Spock's overly-patient lecturing/tutoring. The narrative style was also pleasing and fit this light-hearted story well. The telepathic comments were well-placed. I loved Morrow's comment that because McCoy was a doctor, golfing should come naturally to him. My hat's off to a thoroughly enjoyable story. [2]
I don't care for golf, but really liked reading this in spite of myself, and enjoyed learning just as much as I want to know about golf. I questioned that the Enterprise would have to rely on funding in this manner. I loved Spock as the teacher. The sexual was too much "banter" for my tastes. An enjoyable read. [3]

If you have any knowledge at all of the science‘ of golf, this may or not, be just the story for you, depends how fanatical you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McCoy and Spock are working on a project together, which will be of great benefit to military and civilian populations, but now they need more funding to move on to the next stage, and the best way to get this funding is approach the Senator concerned when he is in his most relaxed and expansive mood – on the golf course, winning! Our boys have just two weeks to learn how to play, starting with which end of a club to hold. Spock takes charge of the coaching and more importantly learns all, and I mean all, the rules.
His coaching methods are a trifle unorthodox, but eventually the great day comes. Do they get their funding? Of course they do but you have to read the story to find out how. [4]
