Issue 1

Force of Waves 1 was published in early 1992 (though not dated) and contains 119 pages.

The very sparse art is by Jane D'Airo, Janet D'Airo, Dearl Martin, and Sue Keenan.

The editorial:

Contrary to popular belief, the greatest force in the Pacific is not generated from volcanic activity, hurricanes or tsunamis. Figuratively, the greatest force is all of the above maelstroms embodied in one person. That indomitable energy source is Steve McGarrett, the remarkable, strong character of the chief of Hawaii Five-0. This is a tangible reality to all of us on the staff of Coconut Wireless in too many forms and instances to mention here. McGarrett-power is now something we believe in, and in fact have come to rely on, in the last few months.

Our gradual surrender to the ’irresistible force’ started in the summer of 1991 when four of us who have known each other for some time (another remarkable story), realized we were all Five-0 fans. Many phone conversations later we organized our first mini-con. Generated from this gathering of disaffected refugees from other fandoms was a not-so-gradual impetus of ideas, episode reviews, theories, debates and finally stories. To others outside the coconut circle it is called obsession, but we know the malady by it’s more common title of ’fanzine’. Originally so simple; a group of long-time fans of the grossly ignored Five-0 hashing out ideas which had lain fallow for more than a decade. Finding Five—0 fans had been like running into Pele while strolling down Kalakaua Avenue, i.e., not very easy. So when we gathered (my house should be labelled ’Oahu Hale’), it was really the eruption of the smouldering energy of Steve McGarrett.

He had lurked in the background behind other fandoms for far too long. We were the catalyst which exploded McGarrett’s psychic energy like lava from Kilauea. This is the only explanation we can find for our incredible, intense commitment to Five-0. How else could we explain our financial support of AT&T, our seemingly endless reams of stories, our music videos and our continual review of episodes we have seen at least ten times?

Thus it was only fitting that this zine dedicated to Hawaii Five—0 be called FORCE OF WAVES; a symbolic acknowledgement of the ’force’ constantly at our backs, and the ’wave’ which has much more meaning than just the opening credits.

For however many volumes FORCE OF WAVES continues, we strive to entertain as well as maintain dedication and integrity to the spirit and quality of the show. We are committed (in more ways than one) to exploring but never violating the characters of Steve McGarrett, Dan Williams and the rest of the Five-0 staff whom we have come to respect, frequently chastise and love.
