Foefic is fanfiction that subverts or contradicts the intent of the original canon. The writers usually consider themselves to not be fans.[1] Alternatively, it may be written to subvert or oppose apparent fannish norms or fanon.[2]

The term appeared in 2005, when a LiveJournal user wrote an extensive series of For Better or For Worse foefics[3] and it was occasionally used to describe the later FOOBiverse.[4] At other times it is attributed to the Right Behind community, based around Slacktivist's reviews of Left Behind, which formed in 2007.[5]
