Reactions and Reviews
1989
Even after re-reading the beginning, I'm still not sure how Spock knew Kirk was mad at him. The. description of them going in separate directions for a moment was too vague to make the point. Also, this story needed an ending. I don't feel that anything was resolved—except Spock's conclusion that love would go on—and that wasn't adequate. What I did like about this story was Spock's logical thought patterns as he considered his own reactions—or lack of such—to Kirk's anger. It's just the kind of things I can imagine him thinking. Overall, this story needed a lot of fleshing out. It came off as a tease—since neither the reader nor Spock ever knows what Kirk is mad about—and I was left feeling that Kirk is a selfish, inconsiderate jerk, and Spock a bit of a wimp. (I think the Vulcan could have been more forceful and perhaps insisted that Kirk communicate with him about the problem.) I don't want to believe they would actually treat each other like that. [1]
I like this story mainly because it made me think. The author didn't trot out nice little answers to all the questions, but left me to consider a few possibilities of my own. But the particular "problem" didn't matter anyway, as it was mainly a catalyst for the look at Kirk and Spock's maturing relationship and the type of difficulty two men of their personalities are going to encounter.
