Excerpt

"Miss, if you wouldn't mind getting off me, please," Kirk suggested... to Finnegan's weapon... "Leaving now would be your best bet," Spock offered. She glanced at the Vulcan, turned back to Kirk. "It's not true what they say... about you and him, is it?"

Reactions and Reviews

Cute and very clever, this story follows Kirk as he tries to outwit the ever present pesky rascal, Finnegan. Kirk and Spock purposely start a rumor that they are lovers in order to stop Finnegan from sending women over to Kirk as practical jokes. To complete the sting, Kirk and Spock pretend to be lovers in a hotel room while old Finnegan observes them. Well, guess what? Really a delightful read, funny yet true to the characters. Complete Nit-Picking Dept.: Will Charlie Brown really be remembered in the 23rd, century? I just want to know one very important thing-does Finnegan go off with the Antarean mint-whiz girl? [1]

I celebrated St. Patrick's Day by reading this story, which was published several years ago. It's a witty, well- written and all-around wonderful tale in which Kirk outsmarts his old nemesis with a lot of help from his friends. Finnegan has been popping up at starbase after starbase, targeting Kirk with gorgeous women who purport to seduce him and then pull the rug out from under him in various ways that are described hilariously. Finnegan also has been spreading the rumor that Kirk and Spock are lovers. Kirk, Spock and McCoy decide to put a damper on Finnegan's activities by concocting an elaborate scheme to show him that K & S are lovers— although they aren't—yet! A great character who's an old classmate of Kirk's at the Academy helps set up the scheme and gets Finnegan to promise that if he can be convinced that K & S really are lovers, he'll never harass Kirk again.

I loved the Kirk of this story. Poor guy, he has such a weakness for beautiful women, and the story shows vividly how Finnegan was able to exploit that weakness. You can't help but feel for Kirk and sympathize with his heroic efforts to restrain himself when one bombshell after another throws herself at him. The scenarios reminded me of Kirk in "Mudd's Women." And the dialogue between Kirk and Finnegan when Kirk is beginning to convince him that he and Spock are lovers is just plain brilliant. Kirk plays the part to the hilt, describing Spock's supposed sexual gifts in exquisite detail, and shows that he truly has the gift of the blarney.

The sense of comic timing was good, Finnegan's promising on his mother's grace was cute, and the story had a satisfying denouement. An added bonus that I much appreciated was the characterization of Spock. This Spock is capable, sophisticated and aware of his own desires—a refreshing change from the repressed guy with all the hang ups whom we see so often in K/S lit.

If you haven't read this story yet, don't wait for next St. Patrick's Day to read it! [2]
