Final Exam is actually the sixth story in a series, but the plot makes it a stand alone story (Hard Start, Jump Start, Lesson One, Lesson Two, and Teacher's Pet are the other stories in this series.) The five stories leading up to this one are fairly happy PWP's, but Final Exam gives us what it cost Jim to create the casualness that exists in the earlier stories, and I loved that. I'm a big fan of the 'darkness inside the light' or 'relationship hell bent on self-destruction' genre, and this one had a couple of glittering moments that should not be passed up if you're into that as well. Jim's slow emotional withdrawal from the relationship and Blair's total cluelessness about it beautifully drawn and completely in-character, contrasting sharply with their subconscious bond. I never felt hit over the head with the Sentinel/Guide spiritual relationship, probably because the physical/emotional one was portrayed as being so brittle, and it provided great motivation for a classic "my partner needs me" scene. I thought the sex was hot, especially the 'take it' scene in the truck, and the end soothingly romantic, meshing with my current desire for a happy ending. Well-written and angst filled, with good use of imagery, I really recommend this story.
