Father Brown is the protagonist of the titular series of the same name, created by G. K. Chesterton.
Canon Background
Father Brown is described as a short, chubby man with gentle features who goes unnoticed in several places, which he uses masterfully in his investigations. Chesterton loosely based him on the Rt Rev. Msgr John O'Connor (1870–1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.
Brown's age, background, domestic and family arrangement are very vague in the story, with even his first name being a mystery. In some works the name Paul is given -- "The Sign of the Broken Sword" -- or he is described as "the Reverend J. Brown" -- "The Eye of Apollo" -- (perhaps in tribute to John O'Connor).
