Fate/Zero is a Japanese light novel written by Gen Urobuchi and illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi, characterized as telling the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War, ten years prior to the events in the orthodox timeline of the Fifth Holy Grail War in Fate/stay night. The main protagonist, Kiritsugu Emiya, is the foster father of the protagonist of Fate/stay night, Shirou Emiya. The light novel was adapted into an anime in 2011, which significantly boosted its popularity.

Canon

As the prequel to the original and canonical work in the Fate series Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero is set in Fuyuki in 1994. It narrates the beginning and end of the Fourth Holy Grail War that takes place there. Both the novel and anime adaptation of Fate/Zero use a countdown to the end of the Fourth Holy Grail War as chapter subtitles. The story is told chronologically, focusing on different characters, which gives the work an ensemble characteristic. The core protagonist, Kiritsugu Emiya, joins the war to make a wish to the Holy Grail to end all conflicts in the world, only to discover after his victory that he has been deceived by the Holy Grail, and his wish cannot be fulfilled. It's commonly recognized that compared to Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero focuses on conflicts between different values and concludes with a heavy and tragic ending.
