Fansies is a fandom nickname used for the Newsies fandom. It is unclear who first coined the term, although it gained popularity with the stage musical and it appears to have originated with the Paper Mill Playhouse performances in 2011.[1]

Controversy

Some older fans of the film have protested the name "fansie," occasionally arguing instead for "newsgirls" (which is gendered) or "am'bastards".

Listen @Newsies : The original fans aren't trying to be difficult, but we aren't "fansies". We're am'bastards. Thank you. #newsiesforever

Go easy on the older fans of Newsies, kids. We’re trying to be welcoming of a new generation, but Newsies wasn’t just a movie or story to us. It was a lifeline. It was a community. It’s very personal to us in a way that we’re afraid you can’t or don’t understand. We share your excitement for the stage version--hell, we’ve been waiting 19 years for it! But if you see a 30-something woman quietly sobbing at a not-even-remotely-sad part of Newsies... just know. That’s probably an NML girl. And we aren’t fansies. No. We’re NEWSGOILS.

Have you ever wanted to smack the person who came up with the term “fansie" upside the head?

Because I have…

Ugh.

I also have quite a lot of contempt for the term “fansie” like seriously who was the idiot who coined that one? I really hate it when people refer to me as a ‘fansie’ I am not and never will be a 'fansie’ I feel like come one before this we were just Newsies fans and we all went by our newsie names.

Libby[6]

I’ve never liked the term “fansies” and I refuse to think of myself as one. I think that’s mainly because I’ve been a huge fan of Newsies since I first saw the movie in 2002 and, back then, the fandom never had a name. We were a community where each of us had our own NN (Newsies Nickname) – to me, that nickname was the mark of the fan. Mine was Stress (hence my username to this day), and most of my online activity stems from my early days in fandom way back when. So, as much as I love both the film and the Broadway show, I just don’t like the cutesy term they came up with for the fans. In my opinion, the term kind of makes me think of a certain type of fan – with a certain type of behavior – and that, more than anything, is what makes me cringe.

Honestly, I feel embarrassed to call myself a “fansie”. It feels like I’m being rounded up together with crazy screaming immature girls who obsessively write “I love you” on the cast’s instagrams. That’s not me. I only use the term “fansies” because it’s what the cast use to address their fans. But I consider myself a “fan of Newsies”.
