FandomAid was a LiveJournal-based community that raised charitable funds through a series of fanwork auctions throughout the 2010s.
FandomAid is a community where like minded authors representing hundreds of fandoms, and countries of the world, have come together to offer custom-written fic in support of those affected by natural disasters.[1]
Origins
In a post on the first anniversary of the Queensland floods - which prompted the launch of FandomAid's first campaign - FandomAid moderator waltzmatildah wrote:
As the first anniversary of the natural disaster that sparked the creation of this community comes around, I would just like to take this opportunity to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone that participated in our fundraisers over the course of 2011. We began the year with devastating floods in Queensland, Australia that saw a single offering in a single personal journal spawn into one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed. Almost overnight, my single entry morphed into 500 fellow lj-ers lending their support to the cause. I was seriously overwhelmed in the best possible way.[2]
Campaigns
FandomAid operated multiple fundraising campaigns in support of communities struck by natural disasters. In its first year, central posts with information on supported charitable organizations and auction procedures appear to have been updated periodically to reflect the details of a new campaign, and so the FandomAid LiveJournal may not provide a precise record of the community's activity over the years. Over the years, participants in the campaigns would also post information to the community about their fulfilled fanworks. While fanfic was the most common auction item, other types of fanworks (including fanart) were offered. Winning bidders were required to submit electronic proof of their donation to the auction moderators.
January 2011: Queensland Floods
FandomAid reported that a total of $12,462 AUD was raised through the campaign in response to the 2010-2011 Queensland floods in Queensland, Australia.
March 2011: Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
On March 13, 2011, a campaign to support those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan was launched on the FandomAid LiveJournal community.[3] Offerors were allowed to choose whether they would offer a standard-style or "buy-it-now"-style auction for their item(s). Bidding closed on March 28, 2011.
FandomAid reported that a total of $2265 AUD was raised through the campaign in response to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
August 2011: Somalia Famine Crisis
Bidding began on August 7, 2011, for the campaign in support of those affected by the famine in Somalia.[4] Again, offerors could choose whether they would offer a standard-style or "buy-it-now"-style auction for their item(s). Bidding concluded on August 31, 2011. It appears that there may have been a March 2011 auction in support of those affected by the famine in Somalia - or possibly there was an attempt to get the auction off the ground, only for it to be delayed until August; it is unclear from the archived posts.[5]
The following charitable organizations were supported by the FandomAid campaign for those affected by the famine crisis in Somalia:[6]
- UN World Food Programme
- UNICEF
- UN Refugee Agency
- Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders
- Australian Red Cross
- CARE Australia
- Canadian Red Cross
- American Red Cross
- British Red Cross
FandomAid reported that a total of $1508 AUD was raised through the campaign in response to the 2011 famine crisis in Somalia.
October 2012: Superstorm Sandy Crisis
On October 31, 2012, a campaign to support those affected by Superstorm Sandy was launched on the FandomAid LiveJournal community.[7] Ultimately, FandomAid reported that a total of $12,422 AUD was raised through the campaign in response to the 2012 devastation of Superstorm Sandy. In addition to the main auction offerings for this campaign, there was a "buy it now" fundraiser.[8] Bidders could also seek out offerors through the custom requests fundraiser.[9]
Offerors could post the details of their auction item(s) on the Auction Offers page. Sample offerings included:

November 2013: Typhoon Haiyan (Philippines)
The FandomAid campaign in support of those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines launched on November 11, 2013.[13] In the first twenty-four hours, over two thousand dollars was raised. This campaign was solely a "buy it now"-style auction,[14] although the organizers did post a page for custom requests.[15]
The following charitable organizations were supported through FandomAid's Typhoon Haiyan campaign:
- International Red Cross
- Australian Red Cross
- British Red Cross
- Canadian Red Cross
- New Zealand Red Cross
- Austrian Red Cross

Flash Auction
In addition to the "buy it now"-style auction and the custom requests offerings, LiveJournal user jackles67 offered a gold pass to the November 22–24 Supernatural Creationent Convention in Burbank, California, which was auctioned off in a forty-eight hour flash auction.[17]
April 2015: Nepal Earthquake
Initially, this 2015 fundraising auction was structured exclusively as a "buy it now"-style auction.[18] A standard-style auction was ultimately offered, with bidding open from May 2–8, 2015.[19] Bidders could also seek out offerors in a custom requests fundraiser.[20]
The following charitable organizations were supported through FandomAid's Nepal Earthquake campaign:[21]
- International Red Cross
- Australian Red Cross
- American Red Cross
- British Red Cross
- Canadian Red Cross
- New Zealand Red Cross
- Irish Red Cross
- Austrian Red Cross
- German Red Cross
- Save the Children Australia
- Doctors Without Borders
- UNICEF
- Direct Relief
- Disasters Emergency Committee
- Additional organizations were approved in the comments on the original post.
As of May 6, 2015, the fundraising auctions in support of those affected by the earthquake in Nepal had raised a reported total of approximately $8878.50 AUD.[22] Technically, the buy-it-now auction and the custom requests fundraiser had two days to go at this point, and so it is unclear if this amount remained the total raised through the campaign. The total raised for this campaign does not appear to have been added to the website's sidebar (where the totals from previous campaigns appear). Periodic posts to the community were made throughout 2015 and 2016 by LiveJournal users who were presumably sharing fanworks completed for previous campaigns, but as of March 14, 2018, there are no public updates on the Nepal campaign or the future of FandomAid.
Example Fanworks
In November 2013, waltzmatildah created a collection on Archive of Our Own for offerors to post their completed fan works from FandomAid campaigns.[23] Each campaign had its own subcollection, and examples of the fanworks offered through FandomAid can be found in the collections.
