Author's Notes

This story was born from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, Yesterday's [E]nterprise. In that story, the Enterprise C under the command of Captain Rachel Garrett, was defending a Klingon outpost from a Romulan attack. Somehow, a freak explosion sent the ship forward in time twenty-two years, where it encountered Jean-Luc Picard's Enterprise D in 2366. Their disappearance from the battle with the Romulans changed history, and Picard's present changed dramatically. Suddenly the Federation and the Klingons were enemies at war, and the Federation was faring rather badly. Of course, our heroes managed to get the Enterprise C back to her own time and restore the "correct" timeline, and all is well again. I became intrigued with the decades between the original Star Trek series and motion pictures (2264 to around 2300) and The Next Generation period, which begins in 2363. It seemed to me that there were about sixty years that would be rife with interesting places, people, and events - future history, really. Some would be familiar since they directly follow events from Kirk's time, while others would foreshadow what we know will come later. the mix intrigued me. Since Spock spans both the original television series and The Next Generation, he plays an important role in this story. He is also a character that we all know, so he helps us to feel comfortable in this previously unknown period of time.
