Reactions and Reviews

"Galileo 7" has always been one of my favorite episodes for its examination of Spock‘s interaction with his crewmates. He is totally flummoxed by the resentment of Boma and the others, not to mention how the natives react to the quite logical (he thinks) plans he invents for their escape from a hostile planet.

This story picks up after that lovely last scene on the bridge when Kirk invades his friend‘s personal space with his quite evident relief that Spock has returned safely. Later Kirk goes to Spock‘s cabin to make certain Spock knows that the teasing on the bridge was not ill meant. He finds Spock devastated by the fact that though he acted logically in each and every instance, two men died while under his command. Spock is going through a crisis of faith about the role of logic. To his captain "It seemed backwards: doubting doubt and discovering providence."

There are other delights to find in this little gem including Spock‘s touching faith that his captain will make it all right again. A very nice exploration of the moving relationship the two men share. [1]
