Reactions and Reviews
1992
This was an interesting exploration of a mature K/S relationship and I thought the characters behaved consistently. I like stories where they grow and grow closer. [1]
1993
This is a "feel good" story. You feel all warm and cozy after reading it. Dana's characterizations are good, and her dialogue is wonderful. I can actually imagine Spock and Kirk saying the words. The story is believable. There are various nice lines throughout the story. I like the ending comment. I also like the title reference seven pages into the story when Kirk tells Spock, "You fill up my empty spaces." Indeed, Spock does, both figuratively and literally. [2]
2009
Though I've read many emotional-laden stories since I first began to explore this archive, 'Empty Spaces' is the first one which brought real tears to my eyes, because it is a story which explores not only love, but the boundaries of love--places whose existence most love stories do not wish--and the courage required to make complex sacrifices much more difficult than those found in physical battle. And so that Spock searches out Carol Marcus despite knowing that Jim will very likely be furious with his action, that his daring might spell the end of a relationship that Spock treasures, is profoundly moving and made this a very unique story indeed. Furthermore David himself is an undervalued character who is often forgotten, ignored or dismissed without consideration for what his existence meant to Kirk. Thank you for considering:)
- [author]: Thank you for your comments on the story, Ziggy. I good precentage of my stories in K/S fandom tended to be of a lighter nature, and by the time this one was published, I think I had something of a 'reputation'. Readers tended to approach my stories waiting for the punch line. It is very nice to read the reaction of someone who has read the story without that preconceived expectation. [3]

This was a very interesting take on a situation I had not considered. I never really thought of Spock finding out about David's existence pre-TWOK. I think you took this idea and made a very well written story out of it. As Ziggy stated, it was very emotionally ridden in the best of ways, and I enjoyed it quite substantially. Much praise for your awesome-sauce writing. Keep it up. [4]
