Emily Dickinson/Sue Gilbert is a canonical femslash pairing in the Dickinson fandom. Their canon relationship in the show seems to have been inspired in a large part by the letters Emily Dickson sent to Sue Gilbert when she was alive which many say are undeniably love letters[1].

Fandom

There was a reasonable amount of fandom discussion about the show on social media during the shows' run, with the pairing of Emily/Sue being popular on Tumblr, particularly with Gif sets and discussions about each episode.

On Archive of Our Own the fandom is relatively small, with 361 fanworks as of 7th October 2023. However, the majority of these (336) are tagged with the Emily/Sue pairing. There are very few works on FanFiction.Net, but again the few there seem to focus on the pairing too.

Fan Commentary

(overview of fans' reactions to the ship, including relevant quotes from both within and outside the fandom)

ok let’s discuss the emisue role reversal though, shall we? because i can’t stop thinking about it.

emily season 1: “let’s just run all the way to the edge of the earth and fall off.”

sue season 3: “if it were up to me we’d run away from your family and raise this baby together. can you imagine that? we could just escape and never see any of these people ever again.”
