"Elena's Shoes" is the first of two stories by Irene, who, I must confess, I had not heard of previously but who has now become one of my very favourite writers. Bodie and Doyle are assigned to babysit the wife of a deposed dictator of a banana republic. Boring, they think, but little do they know! She turns out to be an attractive, manipulative American with an agenda that is quite different from that of her husband, the regime which replaced him, and CI5. Cowley can handle her (just) but the Boys are clearly in over their heads. Furthermore, she has friends in high places - in Windsor, for example: "... I'd like to reverse charges on a call, please... I'm calling for Eggy... Tell him it's Elena .. " She also makes a blatant play for Bodie (and catches him) and Doyle doesn't like it one little bit! The two men are obviously very close, so Bodie's light response to Doyle's barely-concealed jealousy is all the more disturbing. This is beautifully written, in both prose and dialogue, with a wit that never detracts from the intensity of its emotions...[1]
