Reactions and Reviews

What a splendid story, passionate and poignant. (Except for my personal aversion to first person, especially present tense—it's so artificial. But apparently a lot of people like it these days.)

A simple setting, McCoy showing up with Romulan ale while the end-of-mission party is going on down below. Kirk tells him about Spock's visit earlier that day. This involves Spock's requesting extended leave to go back to Vulcan. Kirk is of course in pain and bitter, that Spock wants to leave him, that he wants to purge himself of human emotion.

The scene of Kirk describing their desperate sexual encounter is absolutely gorgeous and very, very hot. (Except I think would be even better if not written in this form). I like how, at the end, Kirk knows Spock will be back. A satisfying Gol scenario. [1]

This is a three page vignette that is so powerful. I've read it a few times and each time it's still so moving. I remember writing Carolyn and telling her how much I loved it when I had first read it. But I don't remember doing an LOC.

Anyway, it's the end of the five year mission and Spock is leaving for Gol. It's told in Kirk's POV to McCoy. At first I wasn't sure if Kirk would spill his guts to McCoy like this, but it works here because of the intensity of Kirk's feelings.

He's devastated that Spock is leaving and in a moment of anger when he thought he might hit Spock he kisses him instead. I could definitely see Kirk doing this, suddenly realizing he wants/loves Spock when he is on the verge of losing him. Kirk soon realizes Spock's feelings also and they make love, Spock offering himself to Kirk, not denying them one time together. Kirk confesses his love during the lovemaking and one final time before Spock leaves, knowing in his heart that Spock will be back, that he can't possibly find what he seeks on Gol because it's him and their love that Spock needs. He tells this to McCoy at the end. So although it's sad we are left with the knowledge that Spock does come back. Bravo to Carolyn! Sometimes a short piece like this is all that's needed to really satisfy! [2]

This story is only three pages long but it is a treasure. Kirk is talking to McCoy, rambling almost, telling him about his last meeting with Spock before the Vulcan leaves for Gol. It's sad and intense and powerful. So much goes on in these few pages, and you’re just drawn into it. The only thing I wish is that it had been longer! Carolyn, how about writing what happens after Gol? Many of us would love to read what happens next. [3]
