Drunk is a Hanson fanfic by Nicky. It was written in 2003 and 2004.
The story is written in second person; in the last chapter, it is revealed that the narrator has written down the story of how she and Zac began their relationship because his most recent overdose (he suffers from a morphine addiction) has erased many of his memories. Noelle maintained a Yahoo! Group for updates on the fic (which she describes as "the fan fiction of a twisted relationship between two very different people"), which also was open for others to post and discuss their own fics.[1]
Reactions and Reviews
And what beautiful writing it is, despite Nicky’s claim that she isn’t one for beautiful prose. I happen to think that she is. Every person in the story is described in beautiful detail, their personalities and tiny little quirks laid out so that they might as well be real to me. The story itself is absolutely heartbreaking, and it leaves me sitting here in tears as I type up this review. That said, despite the sadness, it’s definitely a story worth reading.[2]
There is no doubt in my mind that Drunk is one of the best hanfics ever written. It, without question, will always be my personal favourite. At the time I began reading Drunk, I hadn't really experienced much hanfic, other than the few, odd stories about the girl next door who falls in love with her famous neighbour/s. Drunk was a refreshing find, something intelligent and well written, with a plot that left you wondering until the very end. I instantly fell in love with the characters- each had their own identities, their own faults, problems and histories- and even though a few cliche plot twists were thrown in here and there, there was always something about the way it was written that made it feel original and unique. The writer presents emotion with such beautiful and real description that there was not a moment where I was not completely involved in the story. I love everything about Drunk, and hope that one day, I can produce something so well crafted and exquisitely detailed.[3]
Awards
Drunk won awards in the Feel What I Dream Awards, Reckless Abandon Awards, Soundtrack Awards, Unpredictable Hanfic Awards and Various Artists Awards. It is featured in the PlaceToHide.net hall of fame, as well as the Your Illusion top five lists.
