Driven by Instinct is a Jim/Blair story by Jayd.
Reactions and Reviews
Rereading it after all this time is surprising; I've smoothed out the jerky pacing in my memory and fleshed out the occasional flat scene. All the elements I love about Sentinel are still there, though -- the syncronization which is perfect partnership, the Destiny of The Sentinel shtick, the reactions of the boss and of the ex, the out-of-control passion...it's all still there, and it's still why I call Sentinel my favorite fandom.[2]
Jim and Blair find themselves faced with destiny and new love. Set right after the second season, leaves off events that occur afterward. A moving and beautiful love story.[3]
When James Ellison returned from the jungles of Peru with his heightened senses, he didn't realize he also brought back with him a fierce spirit guide. When he found Blair Sandburg, and agreed to be his thesis project, his protective instincts came into play as the two men started working together. When an inopportune "push by nature" becomes a "mating call" by the sprirt guide... all hell breaks loose into their lives. Having to live with their new-found love over the objections of their superior officer and the men they work with, and the danger involved when an old enemy targets Blair, brings to bear all the Blessed Protector instincts of the Sentinel for a dramatic and violent confontation between bad guy and spirit guide.Action... Adventure... Sex, lots of sex, lots of tastefully done sex. Now that we've got that out of the way, I will honestly say that Jayd has written a beautifully heart-rending piece of slash fiction worthy of awards (if there were any to be given). I actually followed this story as it was released, chapter by chapter, and it was well worth the wait. The characters were flawless in their characterizations, and the premise of a Sentinal/Guide mating being instinctual was brilliant and well-conceived.
After re-reading this story in its entirety, the only minute flaw I noticed happened in the beginning, when the characters jumped from one case to another and seemed to resolve the previous case to their satisfaction, but not to mine. There was no mention of the resolution, and explanation of how the artifacts kept appearing and disappearing, and why. Other than that miniscule, tiny flaw, I thought the rest of the story flowed effortlessly towards a successful and satisfying conclusion.
My only regret is that there is no sequel planned (hint, hint) and that this writer has not written anything since. I honesty would like to see more fiction from this writer.[4]
