Don't Mess Around with Jim is a Kirk/Spock story by Gigi Pinckney.

"Caress of Love" by IM Mueller for Don't Mess Around with Jim -- "I like the pose in this drawing. Spock and Kirk are nude, and Spock is holding Kirk. He has his left hand around Kirk’s arm, and the right hand is on Kirk’s shoulder, with his forefinger caressing Kirk’s lip. Kirks’ right hand is clasping Spock’s right arm. I love the intimate feel of this picture, and the tender expression on Spock’s face." [1]

It was published in the print zine Beyond Dreams #7.

Summary

"Kirk, Spock and McCoy share a cabin while on shoreleave."

Reactions and Reviews

This is a deliciously readable story. I enjoyed its menu and its venue. I also realized that its placement here is just one of the astute editorial decisions that gives this zine its stamp of excellence. In other words, it is a lighthearted affair designed to give the reader a break, coming after so much drama and in one case grimness. I approached it in that vein and enjoyed all of it, starting with the cute title.

At the risk of being called a cop-out, I'm letting the rest remain untold so the reader can have the pleasure of discovery. I will say that the story was moving to me. The explication of Sid's past, the way it was accepted with kindness by the entire group was soft and sure and sweet. Very nicely done, to a turn I might say, by a superb and whimsical writer. A sinfully-delicious, satisfaction-guaranteed tale.

But if that's not enough for the insatiable reader, there's a tiny complementary list of cookbooks at the end. Bon appetit! [2]

This one is a complete change of pace and best described as a lighthearted account of Jim and Spock’s adventures (culinary and otherwise) while on shore leave. After spending a few days alone, they are joined by McCoy (and his wood burning barbecue) and then Scott and other assorted friends and acquaintances also turn up. It was a nice change to read something so lighthearted and it was good to get to see how they interact away from the ship on leave when they can relax and enjoy themselves rather than having to cope with another crisis on the ship. Although there isn’t much actual love making in this one, their relationship is very much to the fore anyway, as they spend a bit of time together enjoying the society of their friends and each other’s company.[3]

Hmm...I don't recognise the pen name but there is something familiar about this author's style...that's got me wondering. This daft offering is a superbly crafted, refreshing delight. I loved it! What a breath of fresh air after all the angst and the passion in the rest of the zine. It is so good to read unpredictable K/S. Here we find an array of colourful food, delicious characters and esoteric partying methods. And in the midst of it all Jim and Spock are so in love. This Spock, I adored. He's very cute. Marvelous work.[4]

Well, once I got past the first few paragraphs of Kirk and Spock in the tub and Spock squeaking a yellow duckie, I quite enjoyed this amusing story. (Somehow, I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea of Spock playing with a yellow rubber duck!) There’s great food, good friends, card games and lots of love and teasing between Kirk and Spock in this enjoyable story of Kirk, Spock and McCoy on shore leave.[5]
