Diary of a Wimpy Kid is an American children's book series created by Jeff Kinney, based on his webcomic of the same name. The series chronicles the life of an unlucky middle school student named Greg Heffley, who documents his various humorous misadventures in his journal.

Canon

Diary of a Wimpy Kid focuses on a preteen boy named Greg Heffley, who is faced with the various hardships of middle school, often accompanied by his best friend, Rowley Jefferson. Greg often documents his misadventures in his journal, utilizing illustrations as much as words. Greg's family consists of his mother Susan, his father Frank, his older brother Rodrick, and his younger brother Manny.

A spin-off series focusing on Greg's friend Rowley was released in 2021, currently consisting of three installments.

Movie Releases

The first, second, fourth, and ninth books were all adapted into films by 20th Century Fox. While the first three films were met with positive reactions, the fourth is loathed by the fandom for controversial casting changes (especially regarding the character of Rodrick, which inspired the hashtag #NotMyRodrick, a parody of the #NotMyPresident hashtag), as well as it's over-reliance on gross-out humor.

Fandom

Diary of a Wimpy Kid has a sizable fan-community on Reddit, with the subreddit r/LodedDiper dedicated exclusively to the series. The subreddit has become known for it's LLB's (Looks Like Books), which are fan-made stories resembling actual novels from the series.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid fanfiction is found almost exclusively on Reddit, often in the form of LLB's. Due to the nature of Reddit, Diary of a Wimpy Kid fanfiction has a reputation of being surreal, outlandish, and in some cases, disturbing.
