Reactions and Reviews

For me, what makes an enjoyable AU fic is one where the characters we know are tweaked ever so slightly as they take up new roles. The Ray Kowalski in this in story is pretty similar to the character from the show (the slightly abrasive and brash cop with his heart on his sleeve...albeit a sleeve covered by a easily doffed leather jacket), but the Fraser here is on the opposite side of the law: he's a killer with a clear code and a trail of dead mobsters and lawbreakers behind him. As the story begins Ray manages to run into the notorious Fraser, and sparks fly between the two from the get-go. Their relationship, however, almost works as background to the story of Fraser's history and his continuing chase for the murder of his father. What I think works quite well and what keeps me coming back to this story is the way the author drew her Fraser. He is and isn't the character we met on the show - one can feel the tension running through him, as though he's reeling from the loss of his father and his rather devastating past and is constantly questioning the reason behind his actions. He's a killer with a conscious, yes, but by becoming a killer of men period he's become what he hates. I read so much into this Fraser, and it's all due to the deft work of the author. Even when his action is heinous you can't help but find him a sympathetic character. Fraser's very AU but, at the same time, not. And the little touches of dialogue that leave one saying "oh, that's so Ray/Fraser" are great. An enjoyable story that, at first glance, is in the "bad-boy Fraser" category, but makes itself something more. [1]
