At first, I very nearly didn't review De Capo al Coda because, on the surface, it's my least favorite kind of K/S situation; a no win scenario that even defeats Captain Kirk. But, on reflection, I have to admit that the depth of emotion was so effective that I found myself deeply moved by the story. De Capo al Coda circles around two very worn and stressed Starfleet officers; Spock, who, in his mind, has always had Kirk's best interests at heart and Kirk, who can no longer understand himself and, so, can no longer understand Spock and his motives. These are post-movie characters, older for having gone through hell together but barely wiser when it comes to their complex and tangled personal lives. It is a sad story, one of loss and sacrifice. Both men do what they feel is best for the other and, in the doing, are at such odds that both walk away miserable. As a reader, though, I found the study of a Kirk and Spock at such odds very interesting and well worth the read.
