Danvanista is the slash ship between Dan Lewis and Karvanista from Doctor Who. The pairing is a rarepair.

Canon

In the show, Karvanista is from an alien species known as the Lupari who each have their own respective human they are sworn to protect, regardless as to whether they like each other or not. Which, at least at first, the pair don't. Their dynamic is an exploration of the term 'man's best friend', if the dog was actually an alien space dogman who reluctantly has to save his human from the end of the universe.

Fandom

Some of the initial, and also current, shipping of the pair appears to be ironic. As the series has progressed, unironic shipping of the two also arose.

John Bishop and the NSFW Fanart

In November 2021, an artist going by @curiosityrocks uploaded a piece of NSFW fanart of the pairing to Twitter. Controversy began to arise as a result of a number of reasons:

  • The artwork was posted directly to Twitter without an NSFW warning.
  • Users started to tag John Bishop - the actor playing Dan - in the replies to the post, something both the OP and many other fans greatly objected to.
  • There were also accusations of zoophilia, given Karvanista's dog-like appearance. One counter-argument pointed out that Doctor Who has canonically featured human/catkind children in a previous episode in 2007, and that Karvanista is a dogman rather than a literal dog and therefore the ship is more akin to monster fucking (i.e werewolves).

On 8th January 2022, the first episode of The John Bishop Show aired. In it, Bishop at one point brings up fanart of Dan and Karvanista, showing four pieces of artwork by curiosityrocks (all credited), progressing from the two having a drink with each other all the way up to the NSFW fanart mentioned above that John was tagged in.
