History
The Digital Versatile Disc is a digital optical disc storage format commonly used for movies and television shows. It was introduced in Japan in November 1996 and in the U.S. in April 1997. They are the successors to laserdiscs.
HD (High Definition) DVD was the next improvement but it lost out to competitor, Blu-Ray. Many productions now come out simultaneously on regular DVD, Blu-Ray, digital download and 4K.
Fannish Purposes
DVDs have been used for viewing parties and for Songtape Collections.
Memes around the collective nostalgia of some of the features of DVDs have arisen, especially in regards to some of the specific trailers and adverts for the likes of Disney, for example, before the main menu is reached.
