Hyoga/Shun is a popular BL pairing in the Saint Seiya fandom involving Cygnus Hyoga and Andromeda Shun. It is the second biggest ship in the fandom, due, among other things, to the scene in Libra's temple where Shun revives Hyoga with the heat of his body, by lying on top of him.
In the Spanish-speaking fandom, the name "Patonejo" is common for this couple. The word is a mixture of "pato" (duck) and "conejo" (rabbit). Hyoga represents the constellation of the swan, and hence the duck nickname. The comparison of the character Shun to a rabbit comes from the original Saint Seiya manga. In one chapter, a legend is told of a rabbit that sacrificed itself to feed a hungry traveler with its own meat, as it had nothing else to offer. Shun similarly exhausts his cosmos in order to revive his friend Hyoga. This connection to the legend of the rabbit is why Shun is often compared to one in the fandom.
History
In the manga it is said that all the bronze saints are children of Mitsumasa Kido with different women. This would make Hyoga and Shun half brothers and therefore an incestuous couple. However, this fact is ignored in almost every other spin-off of the franchise where they appear, and most fans choose to ignore it.
Another reason fans ship them is because in Episode G, Hyoga adopts a little girl who calls them both daddy.
In the Netflix remake "Knights of the Zodiac" (2019), where Shun was genderbent, they are a het non-canon couple, although their popularity is not a fraction of that of the original series version of them.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
- Libra temple missing scene: As this scene looks quite suggestive in the original anime version, a lot has been written about what happens in those missing scenes where the camera is not on them. Some are from Hyoga's POV, others are fluffy and, more rarely, smut.
- Overptotective Phoenix Ikki: Since Ikki cares a lot for his brother Shun in the source material, that trait of his is often used to meddle with the couple, under various excuses.
- Unresolved sexual tension: Even when nothing happens in the Libra temple, in some fanworks this marks a before and after between them and feelings begin to emerge.
