This started out to be an amusing, and therefore surprising, story by an author who is otherwise known long, intricate tales. At first, I thought this a 'fun' read, but as time went on, I felt more and more distant from the situation, which seemed to have difficulty maintaining momentum over its 30 pages. I had trouble with McCoy being so blatantly pushy about trying to get Kirk and Spock together. Klarid's speech patterns were too human, and I was puzzled as to why he would apologize for the melee on the starbase when it was Landry who finally confessed to starting the problem. Also, Kirk's characterization seemed a bit 'off, but I haven't been able to lay my finger on the reason why. On the other hand, the humor in the story did have its moments, particularly in the beginning. In short, I think "Crime and Bunishment" too carefully treaded the line between outright humor and being a tender first-timer. If it would have been one or the other, it may have been more effective. [1]

This was an enjoyable romp, with Kirk drunk on an unfortunate combination of medicine and liquor.

"I'm in love, Bones. I'm deducing Spock."
Fun. [2]

A very enjoyable story! The characterizations of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were all wonderfully done - really them. I had no trouble whatsoever in believing everything that happened and/or was said. Just a warm, funny, and practically perfect story! [3]

The best story in the zine. The only thing 'wrong' with it was that I don't believe that Kirk would not notice that his actions were being interpreted as a come on. [4]
