Reactions and Reviews

TOS long oneshot, possibly pre-slash. Spock’s brief and accidental intrusion in a parallel world has devastating consequences on it. Can he learn to deal? Beautiful story of emotional hurt/comfort, with Jim steadfastly present for his friend. Great character development and excellent writing. [1]

I‘ve been trying to figure out the best way to review Debbie Cummins‘ brilliant "Cries of the Children" (pre-slash TOS) without spoiling it, which was really tough. "Cries" is uncompromisingly realistic in the way it examines how events larger than individual people change lives. Shortly into a routine visit to the idyllically named planet Arcadia, Spock disappears. Debbie captures Kirk‘s fear and sorrow and his intense need to do everything he can to find out what happened to his friend. But Spock returns, well and whole, and everything seems normal again. The surprise appearance of an alien on Arcadia‘s surface brings a new mystery – and when the answer is revealed, the full impact of what happened during Spock‘s disappearance starts to come into focus. As another reviewer commented, this is emotional h/c at its best. [2]
