Continuum is a yearly speculative fiction and pop culture convention held in Melbourne, Australia. The convention has continued since 2003, except for 2007 when it was replaced by the Australian National Science Fiction Convention instead, 2008 when no convention appears to have been held and a three-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic in 2020.
In its promotions, the con defines its ambit as:
"Fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and any speculative genre you can think of; panels, book launches, Q&As and more await.
The con also oversaw a number of awards: the Chronos Awards for excellence in Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror by Victorians, awarded between 2009 and 2014; the Infinity Award for overwhelming contribution to Australian fandom by a resident of Victoria (2012 and 2019) and the Ian Gunn Memorial Award for "unsung heroes" of Victorian sci-fi fandom (2009, 2019).
History
Continuum was founded by sci-fi fan Danny Oz in 2003, inspired by Swancon, the yearly convention held in Perth, Western Australia and following much of their structure, including having a convention foundation (The Continuum Foundation), awards for fan contribution, outstanding achievement and service to fandom (the Infinity Awards, Chronos Awards and Ian Gunn Memorial Awards) and providing "Continuum Lifer" badges to fans attending their 10th convention (SwanCon recognises fans with 20 Year and 33 Year Badges).
Unlike SwanCon and other Australian conventions, Oz did not intend Continuum to host the Australian National Science Fiction Convention (Australian Natcon) and made the structure difficult to adapt to a large scale convention size. That changed in 2012, with Continuum 8 hosting the 51st Australian Natcon and subsequently hosting again in 2014 (Natcon 53), 2017 (Natcon 56), 2019 (Natcon 58) and 2024 (Natcon 61); the 2025 convention will also be a Natcon (63).
