The status or state of a fanwork refers to whether a work is finished.
On AO3, this is denoted on a series as 'Complete:' No/Yes. And for stand-alone works, 'Chapter:' #/# - if both numbers are the same, it suggests the work is finished. Although some creators may come back and add another chapter if they decided to add more to the story. Multi-chaptered works will also have 'Completed:' followed by the date, to state when a work was finished. On SquidgeWorld, which is modeled after AO3, it is the same.
On fanfiction.net and WattPad there does not appear to be a way to tell the status of a fanwork.
Until a work is finished, it is referred to as a WiP or 'Work in Progress.'
A work may also be abandoned, which means that the creator stopped working on the piece, leaving it to remain unfinished.
