Reactions and Reviews

This is a very short piece but enjoyable nonetheless, which takes place just after the end of the film “The Final Frontier” and deals with how Kirk reacted to Spock’s death at the hands of Khan. It starts with Spock being awoken in his quarters not for the first time by hearing a strange noise coming from Kirk’s cabin next door. Of course he investigates and discovers Kirk deeply upset and being comforted by McCoy. It is not really clear whether or not Kirk knows he is there at first anyway, but McCoy certainly does and manipulates events so that Kirk tells him what has been bothering him so much while Spock can hear as well. We learn that what has been upsetting Kirk so much is the fact he never told Spock before he died that he loved him and never took the opportunity to actually tell Spock this. Of course McCoy is as gentle and supportive as we would expect, and in the end, he manages to make sure that Kirk is aware of the fact that Spock is there as well and that he at least is sure that Spock’s response to what Kirk has to tell him will be favourable and that he has no reason not to tell him what he has been longing to tell him for such a long time. One of the things I liked about this story, short as it is, is the fact that the author does not attempt to belittle how Kirk feels, and accepts his regrets that he has never confided in Spock how he feels about him, and how grateful he is that he has been given a second chance.
