Combeferre is a character from the 1862 Victor Hugo novel Les Misérables and its subsequent adaptations. He is one of the most prominent members of Les Amis de l'ABC, and is canonically described as the group's "guide" where Enjolras is its "chief." Combeferre's idealism and belief in slow, peaceful, progress is contrasted with Enjolras' uncompromising force, but Combeferre himself is heavily armed during the uprising.

Common Pairings

Combeferre is often shipped with other members of Les Amis de l'ABC, most commonly Courfeyrac and Enjolras. In Enjolras/Grantaire fanworks, he is usually paired off with Courfeyrac or Éponine.

  • Combeferre is most commonly depicted in art as a blond white man with glasses or as a black man with glasses. Often he will be the only member of Les Amis to wear glasses in group art.
  • Combeferre is commonly portrayed as a medical student, especially in Canon Era fanworks. This is implied, though not stated, in canon.[2]
  • Combeferre is often portrayed as the sensible, parent-like member of Les Amis.
  • An off-hand comment about Combeferre drawing a moth from memory in the initial description of him has led fans to associate him heavily with moths.[3]
