Coal is an exchange fandom term that is used to refer to a terrible exchange gift. It was coined by Yuletide participants and refers to the idea of getting a lump of coal from Santa at Christmas. Gifts can be considered coal for a variety of reasons, including DNW hits, bad writing, dewclaws, being ODAO, kittyfic, etc.
In some contexts, "coal" might also refer to the anon memes Yuletide Coal (2010-2019) and coaltide (2019-present) as Yuletide Coal's nickname "_coal" sometimes gets the underscore dropped. Anonymous participants in both communities are called "coalies".
