Most of CI5 are gathered on Christmas night at Cowley's, a common occurrence for some seven years so now. Bodie is asleep, and Ray thinks back to the way the first gathering happened in his first year on the squad.
At first I found the idea of such a not very convincing somehow, particularly as the atmosphere is so cozy. However, it's a nice idea. The flashback gives us a couple of bits of information on B & D's relationship (a slow course from sexual joining to open commitment). Again, I found Bodie's decision to ring Cowley then visit him somewhat unlikely and sudden, but again a nice idea.
Though the idea of Cowley buying Bodie a teddy bear seemed somewhat improbable. The ending, too, is pure schmaltz, with them all listening to carollers.
But then again, that s the type of thing people want for a Christmas read! [1]
