Reactions and Reviews
Hurt-comfort has a long tradition in gen as well as in K/S, but I actually think it isn’t done too often in K/S. A friend of mine says when it doesn’t work “it’s all hurt and no comfort.” Like you, I really object to the idea that part of Kirk and Spock’s love for one another would involve hurting each other. However, there’s a Susan K. Dundas story (since I seem to have singled her out, above) in Way of the Warrior 4, called Chains of Love, where within a loving established relationship, the fellas experiment with tying each other up, with “acting” out the role of a slave. It’s done with a sense of playful curiosity, without any pain at all being inflicted, and I’ve always liked that story. To me, that’s how the guys would experiment with the whole leather scene, in a mature and loving manner. I just can’t see them into sado-masochism, as to me that implies a truly disordered personality, and I simply can’t characterize either of them that way. [1]
This story has no real plot, it's just a 13 page love scene. BUT!! What a love scene!! The erotic poetry she wrote for this story is outstanding and gets you right where she's aiming it. Sustaining a single sex scene for ten long full pages without a break, and making you love it, takes real talent. Well done. [2] This is a fairly short, but enjoyable story which starts with Kirk spending a night alone on the ship while Spock is attending a series of meetings at the nearby Starbase. He discovers that his bondmate has left him a consolation present, a book of Vulcan love poetry which of course he starts reading. Both Kirk and Spock are well described here with Kirk wondering what Spock’s motives were in leaving him this particular book – whose erotic nature is almost guaranteed to keep him awake! The second part of the story deals with what happens when they get back together after the meetings are over and act out what Kirk has been reading in the book which leads to one of the best and hottest encounters between them I have read in a long time – the way in which the poetry in the book is reflected in their lovemaking is very well portrayed with both men very much in character – this one definitely scores ten out of ten on the erotica scale!
