Excerpt
It's October 1968, cool autumn beneath the ever-changing skies of San Francisco. The Summer of Love is a year and more gone, but the music scene still thrives in this city of steep hills and fantastic architecture.Paul Leluvo, drummer and leader of the hugely successful Magical Merlin's Band, knows that his lead singer, Calli, is different. He's heard all the rumors about her. But he's loved her for a year, and her odd habits don't bother him. Nevertheless, people say that she can enter a room so silently you'll never know she's present; that sue sometimes seems to read your thoughts; that it's her mind that links the band and its audiences in a soul-stirring, visionary intimacy.
But then, these days there are tall tales aplenty in the making and the telling - and besides, doesn't everybody like to gossip about the personal lives of rock & roll Stars? If Calli likes to seclude herself in the tower of Paul's old Queen Anne mansion and only appear at dusk, that's her affair. The fact is, Magical Merlin is a deservedly successful group, and Calli, whatever her eccentricities, is a remarkable artist. Nobody's arguing with that. Until one night, Paul and Calli, driving north over Mt. Tamalpais on Highway One, meet someone who, quite simply, wants them dead. Before that night gives way to dawn, Paul discovers the truth about his beloved Calli - and Magical Merlin's Band finds itself enmeshed in myths more ancient than human history...
Reactions and Reviews
This is NOT what you remember from GOOD GUYS WEAR FANGS 1!") ("This is one of the most haunting and lyrically beautiful stories I have ever read, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. She spins a tale that will pull you right off the page into a magical never-never land. And she knows what she's writing about -- Magical Merlin's Band is loosely modeled on the various professional bands Ms. Chilton and played and sang with for twenty years beginning in the sixties, and the songs we see quoted are real songs performed on real stages... (I didn't find this out until I asked her how she got the songs and the descriptions of the band and the music to seem so real!) At any rate, if anyone is actually interested in hearing these lyrics played and sung, SASE to me or to Ms. Chilton at the address given at the end of her story. I think she just might -- if there's enough response -- consent to do a tape for us! And check out the art. She does great illustrations, too. [1]
