Because they had little to no canon interaction the pairing is a complete fan creation. In the early seasons of the show it appears that there was a small, but dedicated, group of fan creators that made fanworks for the pairing, but as the seasons wore on, and the characters were rarely seen on the series, the fandom for the pairing dwindled.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
- Infidelity: because both characters were married, separated from their spouses by several decades of space travel, many fanworks will focus on the pair having an affair, and its emotional ramifications. Many times the affair leads to a long term romantic relationship, but not always
- Carey Lives: some fanworks ignore Joe's canonical death in season 7 of the series
- Death: exploring the aftermath of Joe's death, and its effect on Samantha
