Canary in a Coal Mine is a Jim/Blair Sentinel story by Sorka.
Reactions and Reviews
This an interesting “fork-in-the-road” AU which takes place after Sen Too, changing things so that TSbyBS never happens. Because the Temple of the Sentinels is an unexplored site, the university is going to fund a group to study it and they want Blair to lead the expedition. Its significance means that he can write up his findings and get his doctorate. Blair is ecstatic; not only will this bring him personal prestige, but it solves the problem of how to protect Jim's identity in his original dissertation. The only hitch is that he will be away for at least three months and possibly more. Jim, feeling guilty over all the recent problems they’ve had, encourages Blair to go. Within a couple of months, Jim starts to get sick and becomes sicker. Finally, he decides to leave Cascade for the pristine wilds of Alaska, hoping it will make dealing with his wayward senses tolerable. Will it be enough? What caused them to get out of whack? What will Blair do when he gets back to Cascade? Read to find out.[1]
