Criticism and Controversies
Season 2 of Arcane felt rushed to some fans — which it possibly was to tie everything up as the show was ended after just two seasons — and as a result some characters underwent character arcs which fans felt were out-of-character or disappointingly written. Caitlyn is one of the characters whose story-line was criticised by many fans, for the story-line playing out the way it did, the interpretations of copaganda which came with the story-line, and then the disappointing and underwhelming redemption arc which Caitlyn underwent. After Jinx kidnaps Caitlyn and murders her mother, Caitlyn goes down the root of obtaining revenge and stopping Jinx at all costs, becoming ruthless in her pursuit.
Some fans felt that it did not fit her character as established in season one, while others felt that valid criticisms of the story-line were being lost amidst some fans being homophobic about CaitVi, which then led to any criticism of Cait or Vi being accused of being rooted in homophobia or hatred for sapphic pairings.
Idk it's just exhausting to watch a show reward the fascist cop, punish the suicidal mentally ill "terrorist," and then watch an entire fandom go "you're stupid and media illiterate for being annoyed with this choice and also you hate sapphics you stupid sapphic." I support womens wrongs but Aracane was soooo copaganda it was honestly embarrassing for them.the-mpreg-guy, Tumblr [1]
Other fans, however, felt that there was sense in the writing that underpinned Cait's actions and how she behaved; that it was a commentary on her privileged upbringing and how even well-meaning people could, in the right circumstances, become a tool for hateful and fascist movements. Some of those fans also felt that a problem in the writing came from the rushed return to herself, without any genuine redemption arc.
i wish they would have stuck to dictator caitlyn instead of having her do an immediate 180 when she sees vi again. her entire narrative up to this point has been exemplifying how prejudice and privilege, however subtle, can rapidly twist a relatively well-meaning but ultimately misguided liberal into a fascist tool & her spontaneous change of heart really undermines that.psychonautic, Tumblr [2]
Fans who wanted to explore her characterisation further and discuss how she was written and the potential her storyline could have had, were often frustrated that attempts to do so were also interpreted as being from a bad faith perspective.
You know something sad is caitlyn is such an extremely well executed and written character and so interesting psychologically, yet so many attempts to analyze her and the reasons and motivations conscious or unconscious behind the way she functions and acts, are seen as hate or bad faith critisicm, when that’s what makes her so interestingpsychonautic, Tumblr [3]
