When Fjord was struggling with his pact with Ukutoa, Caduceus Clay started paying attention to him and mentoring him, noticing that Fjord needed some spiritual guidance. And after Fjord became a paladin of Wildmother, that relationship deepened on the show. Fans saw the shipping potential and Fjord/Caduceus is now (possibly) the biggest slash ship for either of the characters.
After Caduceus Clay was confirmed in canon to be Asexual and aromantic, some fans felt that it was no longer appropriate to slash the two characters or that only a platonic interpretation should be taken in fanworks.
