C.J. Cherryh is an American science fiction author, and winner of multiple Hugo awards for her novels. Her most famous stories are set in the Alliance-Union universe, a spacefaring civilization set in the stars neighboring Earth. Most stories deal with the conflict between the highly independent trading Alliance dominated by mostly Matrilineal ship families and station dwellers, and the monolithic planet based Union with its cloned slaves.
Downbelow Station is set at Alliance’s largest station which circles a planet with intelligent hominid like aliens. Cyteen tells the story of labor-stretched Union and the psychologists who create their cloned slave class.
One area favored by fans is the deeply psychological world of the scientists on Cyteen, and the character Ari Emory II, the clone of the designer of the slave class (the Azi).
There is also numerous fan art for her Chanur series (a story where a human finds himself on the ship of Lion-like aliens called the Hani) as well as her Foreigner series.
